[7 Signs Your Pet Needs Immediate Veterinary Attention]
When your pet is unwell, the question arises: do they require urgent assessment by a veterinary surgeon, or can it wait? Here are some critical scenarios where you should contact your vet for advice immediately:
1. Severe Blood Loss: whether from a wound, the mouth or nostrils, or present in vomit or diarrhoea
2. Collapse or Weakness: if your pet suddenly loses the ability to stand or walk
3. Persistent Vomiting or Retching: Excessive vomiting, or constant retching with no outcome especially if the pet's abdomen appears bloated
4. Breathing Distress: for example choking, coughing, wheezing, breathing effort excessive panting (in dogs), or open mouth breathing (in cats)
5. Lack of Urination: straining to urinate or inability to produce urine could signal of a very serious issue for example urethral obstruction or acute kidney failure.
6. Severe Lameness: if your pet is not weight bearing on a limb for a prolonged period, or if there is a visible leg fracture
7. Neurological Symptoms: especially after head trauma or a fall from height, watch for signs like disorientation, decreased alertness, dragging of limbs, head tilt, circling, or prolonged seizures
